એલિસ બ્રિજના વિકટોરિયા ગાર્ડનવાળા છેડાથી લાલ દરવાજા તરફના વળાંકવાળા રસ્તા પરની કીટલી પર કામ કરતા ૧૯ વર્ષને અડું અડું થતા આ છોકરાને શું કહીશું? હિન્દુ કે મુસ્લિમ કે ખ્રિસ્તી, કારણ કે ગરીબીને કોઇપણ ધર્મમાં વાંધો નથી આવતો, બસ સરકાર એનો રસ્તો ના રોકે એટલું જ એને જોવાનું હોય છે. ચાની ચૂસકી લેતાં સીધું જ છોકરાને પૂછ્યું, ‘આવી ચૅઇન (હિન્દુ, મુસ્લિમ, ખિ્રસ્તીનાં ધાર્મિક પ્રતીકોવાળી) કેમ પહેરી છે?’ એકદમ હળવાશથી, ‘લારી પર ઘણીબધી ચૅઇન જોઇ, એમાંથી આ બહુ ગમી ગઇ એટલે પૈસા આપીને પહેરી લીઘી.’ જવાબ ગમી ગયો એટલે બીજું કંઇ પૂછ્યું નહિ. પછી એ એની મસ્તીમાં કામ કરવા લાગ્યો, ને હું આદર્શવાળા વિચારોમાં ખોવાઇ ગયો.
વાહ તમને, તમારી નજર અને તમારી કલમને... જે હંમેશા સાચા પ્રશ્નો અને સમસ્યા પર પડે છે અને તેને આ માધ્યમથી વિશાળ ફલક પર અકબદ્ધ કરી દે છે...

ReplyDeleteSorry, I cannot agree with you on your title 'Pure Secularism' given to a photo of a boy wearing locket with icon of more than one religion. To me and to English language 'SECULARISM' means non-religious. You can title as 'PURE SERV DHARM SAMBHAV'. In India it is a side effect of our dear GANDHIVAD which has created this hiatus of meaning between 'non-religious' and 'sarv dharm sambhav' to the extent that our elders who enacted the constitution made the same mistake by giving special status to the educational institutions of minorities by making a special provision in the constitution. In public life no body should exhibit ones religion which we fail utterly from the inception of the constitution and the republic thereunder respectively. First clash came when our first President Rajendraprasad went to Somnath when it was renovated. Nehru rightly criticised it.Indira thereafter made a habit of visiting all and sundry religious places all over the country and made mess of the idea of secularism for garnering votes of all the religious minorities as well as religious majority. It has become a fashion to keep a photo of religious icon in public places such as government offices, police stations, hospitals ST buses and you think of. Till we shun these things and clear the confusion in our mind about what is secular India will never be free of communal virus.
